That, on the other hand, the people occasionally knew and condemned small defects of the “world-renowned men,” we can gather from the almost proverb-like expression of our text, \*âcariyamuṭṭhim na karonti\* (II. 221, 250), \*i.e.\*, “they don’t make the closed fist of a teacher, they keep nothing secret,” as the teachers evidently occasionally used to do, in order that they might have something not known to the pupils.
