This refers to a banquet offered to the gods, but it is also offered to the brahmins, who are the “human gods.” Elsewhere, Thieme suggests that the dakṣiṇā is a “Gastgeschenk” (\*Der Fremdling im Rigveda\* \[Leipzig, 1938\], 27; previously, \*Indo-Iranian Journal\* 3 (1959): 255, n. 36). I have doubted this interpretation, but I now recognize that the rendering “Gastgeschenk” seems to touch the essence of the matter.
