§ 79. Alexander's raid and retreat did not cover the whole of the Punjab. There was still the valley of the Sutlej and that of the Beas in the Vāhīka country to be traversed. The republics in those regions are to be recovered only from Indian literature. The \*Yaudheyas\* and the \*Āraṭṭas\* were in those regions, and so were also probably some of the republics mentioned in the Kāśikā which draws on ancient literature, \*e.g.\*, the \*Śayaṇḍas\*, the \*Gopālavas\*, the \*Kāuṇḍibṛisas\* (Kāśikā, P. V. 3. 114, p. 456).
