5. The Balutas

c23.s10.1

The Balutas or village artisans played an important part in Maratha villages. They enjoyed hereditary monopoly of their trade within the village, and in the harvest time got a share of grains from each cultivator. Reference to the perquisites of the artisans (Karukainadi) is made in a Yadava inscription dated 1175 of the Shaka era.³⁸ The Balutas were termed as Karu in the Peshwa days also. It is not therefore unreasonable to suppose that these existed in the Maratha village in the 13th century A. D. also, when Maharashtra as still under the Hindu Yadava kings.
