According to Malalasekera, Allakappa country was “near Magadha,”⁴ and Majumdar Sastri connects the neighbouring Veṭhadīpa with Kāsiā.⁵ However, Hoey identified Veṭhadīpa with Bettiah in the Camparan district of Bihar.⁶ These suggestions are most likely guesses. Just as it is impossible to give an elaborate picture of this republic and its institutions, so the sources do not support us in locating them geographically. The only thing that can be said at present is that the Bulis of Allakappa were neighbours of the Veṭhadīpaka-Droṇagrāmakas,⁷ and that they were not very far from the last scene of the Buddha’s life.
