SANNYĀSĪ. A Brāhman in the fourth and last stage of his religious life. (See Brāhman.) In the present day the term has a wider meaning, and is applied to various kinds of religious mendicants who wander about and subsist upon alms, most of them in a filthy condition and with very scanty clothing. They are generally devotees of Siva.
