v1.c11.s26.1
The regular planning of the Harappa cities [4.9] could not have been possible without the use of some mathematical instruments even though elementary. Such instruments have been found in the excavations of Harappa sites, though in the reports they are sometimes dismissed as unidentified objects. Thus a fragmentary scale of shell was found at Mohenjo-daro (Mackay, 1938). Another scale of ivory with gradations said to be more accurate is reported from LOTHAL and still another from KALIBANGAN [see also 6.29]. A shell 'compass' also comes from LOTHAL and another one from Mohenjo-daro (Roy, 1967). Terracotta plumb-bobs are also known from LOTHAL.
