The discovery of Ceylonese coins in the s. Dts of India and of Coḷa and Pandya coins in Ceylon attest to the close commercial and political contacts between Ceylon and Tamil Nadu. The earliest Ceylonese coins may go back to the 10th century. They are often referred to in contemporary inscriptions as \*īḻakkāśu\* and were used side by side with the regular local coins.
