Rainfall is both scarce and uncertain. It ranges from 450 mm in the e. to 100 mm in the n.-w. There are frequent failures of rain, leading to famine and large-scale migration of men and livestock. There is considerable seasonal and diurnal variation in temperature. The mean maximum temperatures in summer is 40°C but highest recorded temperatures reach up to 48 to 50°C. High temperatures and parched earth cause strong dust storms on several days during summer. In winter the mean minimum temperatures range between 3° and 8°C and lowest temperatures recorded are −4°C. Chilly winds blow during this season and frost occurs frequently.
