The Quaternary system in India has a far more varied development than all the earlier geological systems. It covers nearly 650000 sq km of n. India under river deposits (Ganga-Yamuna basin). Further there are long stretches of contemporaneous ice deposits in the Himalayas, desert and lateritic, littoral, lacustrine, riverine and subserial accumulations in other parts of the country.
