In Orissa on the basis of the studies on laterites and the fluvial processes the Lower Palaeolithic tools have been placed in the middle stages of Mid-Pleistocene and the Mid-Palaeolithic to Upper Pleistocene. The basal fossiliferous deposits at Makramatia and Mahulia consisting of shale and limestone were earlier believed to be of Miocene Age but now at least some fossils have been dated to the Lower Pleistocene.
