The PGW, with its uniform grey surface and painted designs in black, has been regarded as the hallmark of the culture to which it belongs and which has been named after it \[4.15\]. Its distribution is confined to a specific geographical horizon—Punjab, Haryana and the upper Ganga valley, the peripheral sites being ROPAR and MADHOPUR in the n., GILUND (surface finds only), Lakhiyopir in Sind \[this has been doubted, Dhavalikar, 1977\], CHOSLA near Ajmer and GONDI near Jaipur in the w., ŚRĀVASTĪ in the e. and UJJAIN in the s. KAYATHA, 40 km e. of Ujjain, has also yielded a dozen sherds. \[A few sherds reported from KAUŚĀMBĪ and VAIŚĀLĪ may be of doubtful affiliation.\] But the prominent sites are AHICCHATRĀ, ALAMGIRPUR, ALLAHAPUR, ATRANJIKHERA, HASTINĀPURA, KHALAUA, NOH, ROPAR and SARDARGARH, all excavated.
