Evidence from SANCHI, Andher, Satdhara and Sonari all in c. India, shows that the example set by Aśoka in the dissemination of Buddha's relics was followed in the 2nd-1st century B.C. in respect not only of his direct disciples like Śāriputra and Maudgalyāyana but of later distinguished teachers. Portions of bones were evidently collected from their original deposits for enshrinement in \*stūpas\* erected in different parts of the country. In later periods small \*stūpas\* were built over the corporeal relics of the important monks as well.
