The mud \*stūpa\* at VAIŚĀLĪ has been identified by A.S. Altekar, the excavator, with the one raised by the Licchavis over the relics of Buddha, on account of the primitive feature of the \*stūpa\*, the location of which has been thought to correspond to Hiuen Tsang's location of the \*stūpa\* of the Licchavis. However the identification is not beyond dispute. This \*stūpa\* yielded a small soapstone casket containing a small quantity of ashy earth, a piece of gold leaf, two glass beads, a small conch and a copper punch-marked coin \[3.1\]. The reliquary together with the knobbed lid presents a globular profile (\*IAR 1957-8\*, p. 11; \*1958-9\*, p. 5).
