The same story of intensive colonization of known geographic environments and exploitation of the local ecological zones is repeated in other areas as well. In Mewar numerous microlithic assemblages occur on elevated rocky outcrops several km away from river courses. In the semi-arid environment of the Deccan plateau also microlithic industries are found on hundreds of hilltops and slopes away from any perennial water sources. \[Mesolithic occupation spread to e. India as well, see BIRBHANPUR.\]
