In one region however Mesolithic peoples pushed their settlement in an entirely new habitat. This is the alluvial plain of the Ganga valley. A large number of sites have been recently located in Dts Allahabad, Pratapgarh and Varanasi on the shores of living or fossil lakes created by the meanders of abandoned river courses (cf. SARAI NAHAR RAI; Sharma 1975). These people no doubt exploited fish, tortoise and other aquatic life in addition to the abundant plant and animal foods of the area. The fertile alluvium and adequate rainfall of the Ganga valley must have supported dense vegetation and rich fauna of which fragmentary vestiges still survive.
