The information available at present is far from adequate for the reconstruction of a satisfactory picture of the settlement pattern of Stone Age communities of India, the reason lying in the nature of research carried out so far. Though Stone Age research in India has a respectable antiquity, the subject has still not become truly professionalized, much of the work having been carried out by generalist archaeologists; thus there are many amateurs and very few specialists in the field. The awareness of the role of specialized disciplines like geology, geomorphology, palaeontology, palynology and pedology and scientific dating methods in the study of prehistory has not yet fully developed. Research has been mainly in the form of exploration and only a part of it is adequately published. Most of the exploration has been confined to secondary sites like alluvial deposits, eroded or washed-off material in river beds and to surface sites. Excavations have been few and far between and the number of those of true primary sites hardly exceeds a dozen.
