(xiii) Tamil Nadu. The first evidence of post-Stone Age settlement in Tamil Nadu is limited mostly to Megalithic graves \[4.17.10\], some of them perhaps early. The evidence of an earlier Neolithic settlement \[4.6.10\] is obtained at PAYAMPALLI. Excavated historical settlements \[4.18.11\] are still few in number: URAIYUR, ARIKAMEDU, KANCHIPURAM, KAVERIPATTINAM and KORKAI. The flourishing period of these settlements corresponds to the period of the Indo-Roman trade in the peninsula. Settlements are continuous after that, but no detailed listing in the light of modern discoveries has yet been done.
