### [v1.c19.s1.5](https://indike.org/pramana/ins.reference.ghosh-1989.v1.c19.s1.5)

Though Lower Palaeolithic sites have been found in Himachal Pradesh (Lal, 1965) and Potwar plateau of Pakistan (De Terra \*et al.\*, 1939), the number of tools found on them is very small in comparison to those from the sites in c. and s. India. Similarly small numbers of Lower Palaeolithic artefacts have been found on the w. coast in Dt Ratnagiri and in the Garo Hills of Assam. But these sites seem very poor in comparison to those along the e. coast or inland in s. and c. India. It can therefore be safely stated that Palaeolithic populations preferred the low-rainfall and warmer regions of the peninsula and only occasionally ventured into the high-rainfall, densely forested environments of the w. coast and Assam and into the colder regions of Kashmir and Himalayan foothills.
