### [v1.c19.s1.9](https://indike.org/pramana/ins.reference.ghosh-1989.v1.c19.s1.9)

True Upper Palaeolithic industries characterized by blade and burin tools are as yet known only from a few areas and except for s. India (Dts Chittoor, Cuddapah and Kurnool) the evidence is nowhere rich. In these Dts however extensive and rich Upper Palaeolithic sites are found. They are usually located along the foot of the hills like Velikondas and Palakondas. Fine-grained quartzite suitable for producing thin slender blades was abundantly available in these hills. Dense forest provided ample plant and animal food resources. Though the sites are away from major river courses, ample marshy environments are likely to have existed in the hill-girt valleys. Even today much of the prehistoric environment survives in these areas, and hunting-gathering communities like the Yenadis and Irukulas partly retain a prehistoric way of life.
