It is difficult to say whether windlass was used for lifting water from the wells. In some private wells at Mohenjo-daro there are no marks caused by friction of ropes suggesting thereby either the use of some form of windlass which, if any were used, might have been made of wood (Marshall, 1931, p. 270) and for only the larger wells. Some of the public wells at Mohenjo-daro show marks caused by friction of ropes on the coping (Mackay, 1938, p. 113). In the smaller private wells water was probably lifted by standing straddle-legged over the well. Sometimes a channel or pavement is provided to drain away the drippings from the pots (Mackay, 1938, pp. 113-4, 154; Vats, 1940, p. 61).
