In contrast to Mohenjo-daro, the number of wells at KALIBANGAN is very small. They have been located in both the Citadel and the Lower City where there is often a well in the courtyard of a house. One of the wells which, according to excavators, is ‘associated with a fire altar . . . showed novel structural features: in the foundation, the ring-wall of the well constructed of wedgeshaped baked bricks, was found to be supported on four sides by (normal type) radial walls of single-brick course' (\*IAR 1966-7\*, p. 32). However from the published photograph (\*ibid.\*, pl. XXIII) it appears that the radial walls are not of 'single-brick course' but of single-brick thickness.
