Excavation at KĀVERĪPAṬṬIṆAM, Dt Thanjavur, the sea-port of the Coḻa kings, brought to light the existence of a wharf. It is an I-shaped structure of kiln-fired brick answering the description of wharfs at Pūhār (Poompuhar) given in the Tamil epic \*Paṭṭinappālai\*. It consists of two platforms between which runs a channel flanked by two rows of wooden posts meant for anchoring boats. Amphorae \[11.19\], Coḻa coins with the emblem of tiger, stone beads and Roman coins are among the important finds. \[See also KILAYUR.\]
