### [v1.c20.s1.1](https://indike.org/pramana/ins.reference.ghosh-1989.v1.c20.s1.1)

The Quaternary \[9.8\] deposits of India have yielded a diverse variety of animal remains indicating that a large number of animals inhabited the Indian jungles in the past. The bones of some of them are fossilized and are represented in the geological formations while others died comparatively recently and have been unearthed as a result of excavations of archaeological sites. As it is difficult to touch upon all the animal types a reference is here made to those which have a direct bearing on chronology and environment.
