In the Indian subcontinent the various subdivisions of the Pleistocene, viz. Lower, Middle and Upper, are based mainly on vertebrate palaeontology and palaeolithic archaeology. The Lower Pleistocene of n.-w. India is generally characterized by the presence of \*Equus\*, \*Rhinoceros\*, \*Elephas\* and \*Bos\*. The late Upper Pleistocene is well dated by a score of ¹⁴C dates in w. India. But the Middle and early Upper Pleistocene are not precisely dated due to the lack of any proper index fossil assemblage and non-availability of radiometric dates.
