With a view to making this information available in a ready compendium, the Indian Council of Historical Research sponsored a project for the compilation of an \*Encyclopaedia of Indian Archaeology\* which was very ably supervised and seen through by the late A. Ghosh, former Director-General, Archaeological Survey of India, assisted by Dr. (Mrs) Himanshu Prabha Ray. Unfortunately, Shri Ghosh passed away in 1981 after successfully completing the project but before the manuscript could be sent to the press.
