One of the earliest specimens of wood recorded in the subcontinent is that of a coffin from the cemetery at Harappa. The wood used was *Cedrus deodara* (*deodar*) and *Dalbergia latifolia* (black *shisham*). Wood specimens identified from other sites are as follows:
