In the Chota Nagpur region \[4.18.4\], particularly in the Khunti area of Dt Ranchi, a highly localized culture, with baked-brick houses and with remains of ironsmelting, is met with in the early centuries of the Christian era. The settlements, called Asura sites \[14.4\], were evidently those of iron prospectors and smelters who established themselves in the locality for a short time.
