In the upper Deccan \[4.18.9\] such sites as PAITHAN and TER came into prominence in Sātavāhana times; earlier towns seem to be absent, though an unidentified Potana or Potali is mentioned in the Pāli texts as the capital of Assaka (Aśmaka), one of the \*mahā-janapadas\*. The flourishing trade that Paithan and Ter enjoyed with the w. world was the source of their prosperity.
