UJJAIN, Ujjayinī of ancient literature, the second major site excavated site in 1956 and onwards, lay on a major trade route. The excavations gave evidence of four major Pds of occupation. Pd I was represented by the PGW recovered in the clay rampart referred to above. The habitation inside the fortified area consisted of structures with rubble foundations and burnt-brick walls. The other ceramic industries associated with this Pd were the black-and-red ware and the Vesiculated Ware \[11.17\]. Iron was extensively used.
