Early historical sculptural art is well represented in Orissa. The earliest example is the forepart of an elephant carved on the top of the edict-bearing edict at Dhauli. The animal, though lacking the typical Mauryan polish, is represented faithfully with a stately movement, vibrant with life and inner strength emerging out of the boulder in harmony with its configuration.
