(ii) Post-classical or protomedieval period. The data relating to the 8th and 9th centuries are available only at a limited number of sites. There is probably a general decline of finer pottery although some types of the previous period continue. There is a greater emphasis on incised and embossed decorations. Rosettes, rows of beads, wavy lines, cross-hatchings, lotus petals, conches and semicircles form the principal motifs or designs. At some sites animal designs are also found on pottery. The principal ware of the period seems to be red though grey pottery is also found in limited quantities at some places. The chief shapes include the deep and shallow lid-type bowl, miniature pot, basin, vase with open mouth, jar, \*hāṇḍī\* with prominent lugs, etc.
