Earlier fortifications at some sites like KAUŚĀMBĪ and AHICCHATRĀ were still in use but the one at MATHURA does not seem to have served any effective purpose. However a notable fortified construction of an earlier date which survived up to the 5th century at SANGHOL had three moats, one outside the \*prākarā\* and the other two inside. At different sites the structural remains normally show more than one constructional phase, and they comprise big and small houses, partitioned rooms, platforms, rows of shops, pavements, \*kuṇḍas\*, wells and drains, besides religious edifices. The thickness of walls in some cases is suggestive of a storeyed building.
