Though the Kamakhya temple on the Nilachal Hill, Gauhati, is a living shrine of a later period, the antiquity of the site goes back to the 7th-8th centuries. Pottery, a relic casket \[12.8\], Buddhist and Brāhmaṇical sculptures, etc., have been found at the site (Choudhury, 1966, p. 437).
