(1) Sand-dunes: In Gujarat and Marwar hundreds of dunes of varying sizes dot the alluvial plain. In Gujarat these dunes often enclose a shallow lake or pond which was the source of aquatic food for the inhabitants. The dunes themselves were covered with thorny scrub vegetation which supported a rich fauna. Human occupation took place on the top of the dunes. In Marwar the dunes along perennial lakes as well as others near seasonal sources of water were inhabited \[cf. 9.2\]. In e. Rajasthan dunes are not so common, but wherever they exist the Mesolithic man occupied them.
