In the layout pattern SURKOTADA in Dt Kutch presents yet another feature. Here the ‘Citadel’ and the ‘Lower Town’ were conjoined, though their relative positions, viz. on the w. and e. respectively, remained unaltered. Both were fortified, there being a common wall in between, a gate through which was also provided for intercommunication. To both the Citadel and the Lower Town there were independent entrances from the s., and that to the Citadel comprised an elaborate ramp and stairway. Made of rubble, which is locally available in plenty, the fortification wall may be seen even today standing to a height of over 4·5 m.
