The trenches excavated so far have shown no evidence of occupation between the 5th and the 10th centuries, although inscriptional evidence from other parts of the country would suggest that the site was under occupation during the Gupta period. Likewise, the Chinese pilgrims, Fa-Hien and Hiuen Tsang are stated to have visited the place respectively in the 5th and 7th centuries A.D. Within a couple of centuries after the re-occupation of the site around the 11th century the usual medieval glazed wares appeared on the scene. Since the medieval times the site has struggled on in one way or another, many of the now-standing temples having been erected during the past two centuries only.
