\*\*Banahalli\*\*, Dt Kolar. The site lies in the upper reaches of the Palar river and probably represents the largest Neolithic \[4.6.9\] Megalithic \[4.17.8\] settlement in s. India. The terrace marks an important open-air station of the Neolithic folk, using a variety of tools, viz. axes, axe-hammers, chisels, digging-stick weights, hoes, grinders, etc. Pale and burnished grey ware and a coarse red ware were also found. The Megalithic Black-and-red Ware \[11.15.3\] and iron objects were found in the upper part of the deposit. Overlooking the terrace are several rock-shelters \[13\] yielding a large quantity of Neolithic handmade pottery and stone implements. \*IAR 1967-8\*; \*1972-3\*.
