\*\*Sambhar\*\*, Dt Jaipur, with an extensive mound on the bank of a dried-up lake, 7 km from the well-known Salt Lake, representing ancient \*\*Śākambharī\*\*, the capital of the Imperial Cāhamānas of the late historical period. A number of black stone sculptures of Brāhmaṇical deities have been found in the neighbourhood from time to time. The mound, 600 m from n. to s. and with an average width of about 550 m, was first excavated by Hendley in 1884 and then by Sahni in 1936-8. As excavated the mound yielded 45 separate small dwellings at six distinct levels ranging in date from the 3rd-2nd century B.C. to the 10th century A.D.
