\*\*Sankisa\*\*, Dt Farrukhabad, on the Kalinadi, lying midway between ATRANJIKHERA and KANAUJ, 40 km from either, called Sāṅkāśya in the \*Rāmāyaṇa\* and other Sanskrit texts, Sankisa in Pali texts and Song-kia-she or Kia-pi-tha by the Chinese travellers, where Buddha accompanied with Brahmā and Indra is said to have descended from the Trayastriṃśa heaven by a ladder of gold or gem, thus making the place a centre of Buddhist pilgrimage. Hiuen Tsang records the construction of ladders by the local princes at the site of the original ladder. He also saw at the site a monastery, a pillar of Aśoka, several \*stūpas\* and a \*nāga\* tank.
