Fieldwork has not only highlighted its importance but has established the antiquity of the site. The excavation conducted by the ASI in 1954-5 under M.N. Deshpande suggested that the site had been under occupation from the Neolithic \[4.6.6\] to modern times (\*IAR 1954-5\*, p. 19). Though the ancient deposits have been greatly disturbed by haphazard diggings in modern times, yet the excavation provided a complete culture sequence of the historical times in W. Bengal.
