Udra is the name of an animal occurring only in the list of sacrificial victims at the Aśvamedha given in the Saṃhitās of the Yajurveda.¹ According to Mahīdhara² it was a crab; but as the commentary on the Taittirīya Saṃhitā³ calls it a water-cat, there can be no doubt that it was an otter.
