Vatsa occurs several times in the Rigveda¹ as the name of a singer, a son or descendant of Kaṇva. In the Pañcaviṃśa Brāhmaṇa² he is said to have passed successfully through a fire ordeal to which he resorted for the purpose of proving to his rival, Medhātithi, the purity of his descent.
