There are three salient features in the story of Āḷavaka which link it closely to the large circle of stories grouped by Professor Watanabe⁸ under the title of Kalmāsapāda stories: (1) The man-eating Yakkha; (2) the captured king saving himself by a promise to provide the Yakkha with offerings, and the sanctity of that promise; and (3) the conversion of the Yakkha.
