8. Varuna A śramaṇopāsaka (lay-votary) belonging to the city of Vesālī. He took a pledge not to kill one who has not attacked him. He acted accordingly even in the Rahamusala battle and went to Sohamma(1) heaven after death. This created a wrong belief among the people that death in battle means heaven. He is also called Varuna Nāgaṇattua.¹
