\*Yudhiṣṭhira\* wished to know whether any fault is incurred by one who gives instruction to a person belonging to a low caste. \*Bhīṣma\* recited what he had heard certain \*ṛṣis\* say: that such instruction should not be imparted to a person of a low or mean caste. He related the story of a \*Caṇḍāla\* who occurred in days of old: There was a \*brāhmaṇa\* who lived in the \*Himavat\*, inhabited by \*rākṣasas\* and \*piçācas\* (a). A \*Caṇḍāla\* asked the \*brāhmaṇa\* to initiate him into a life of righteousness. The \*brāhmaṇa\*, at some distance, refused, saying that he must live according to the rules of his caste (description).
