### [v1.c19.s3.1](https://indike.org/pramana/ins.religion.dutt-1941.v1.c19.s3.1)

Persons belonging to non-Buddhist religious orders could only be admitted into the Saṅgha after they had gone through a probationary period (\*parivāsa\*) of four months and behaved themselves properly during the period.¹ Exceptions however were made, in the case of the Jaṭilas and the Sākyas, the former being believers in the effects of past deeds (\*kammavādino kiriyavādino\*) and the latter being kinsmen of the Teacher.²
