It is a pleasure to be able to publish a new edition of this book so soon after its first appearance. I have taken the opportunity to make a few minor changes in Indian philosophy. I have also added explanatory notes intended to clear difficulties and to answer criticisms which I have met with some of the controversial issues in the field of Indian thought raised by the first volume. My thanks are due to the Fellow of All Souls for his courtesy in permitting me to use in the Appendix the substance of an article which originally appeared in *Mind* (April 1921).
