In the \*Suttanipāta\* several ballads occur, which were the common property of different schools, the story of the sage Asita’s visit, Gotama’s meeting with Bimbisāra after leaving his home, and his temptation by Māra while practising austerities. This is not the story of the great contest, though this is referred to in the poem. These ballads imply a further extension of literary activity, as they appear to be based on the prose legends already existing in the nidānas of the reciters.
