v1.c7.s17.t1.1

The Arab philosopher Djâhiz calls the numerals "figures of Hind" and observes that with these numerals large numbers can be represented with great facility. He asks, "Who is the inventor of the figures of Hind, who are the authors of the *Sindhind* and of the *Arkhand* and the methods of calculation with the ciphers?"⁴

⁴ Djâhiz's work is available in French translation (Caire, *Du rond et du carré*, 1324). Cf. Carra de Vaux, *Scientia*, XXI, 1921, pp. 273-282.
